OC/AU/CRAU REQUIREMENTS

AU DIVERGENCE
- The Herald dies during the invasion on Haven
- Corypheus has recruited both mages and templars to join his ranks
- a new (npc) Divine was elected and a Holy March called against the forces of Corypheus, there is currently an all out war taking place.
- Sometimes people fall out of Rifts. Sometimes people from Thedas get shards in their hands, similar to the Heralds, though less powerful.
- Generally these people go to Riftwatch, an organization that sprang from and now operates separately from the Inquisition.
- Based out of Kirkwall, Riftwatch's main function is to address rifts as they appear and also assist in combatting Corypheus without the influence of the Chantry.

OC HISTORY
Sawbones has no idea who her mother or father were. Like most Casteless, she was born unwanted and managed to survive more by luck than anything, falling in with the grubby street kids that scrounge around the edges of society. While she was still small, she was picked up by Granny Sawbones, the old Casteless woman who performed what passed for medical care in Dust Town. She spent years doing exclusively that, marking time in Carta thugs sewn back together, mixing fertility potions for noble hunters and midwifing more unwanted Casteless babies. Somewhere in there, Granny Sawbones died and Sawbones took her name.

She would have continued on like that, except the topside intruded in a sudden way. The Orlesian Civil War had disrupted Ozammar’s trade with the topside. Lean living in Dust Town was getting leaner still and violence was starting to spill over from Dust Town, into the lives of Regular Upstanding Dwarves. Riots were spreading from the Casteless to the lower Castes and so the Council did what it had to. Sawbones, an open secret among upper Caste dwarves with Carta connections, was rounded up with a number of other Casteless and thrown into prison. When the loss of a Castless surgeon didn't sufficiently quell the riots, it was decided that Sawbones would be publicly exiled, hoping the fear of the Deep Roads would help quell the riots.

Sawbones had no idea how long she spent in the Deep Roads. Most of the others she’d been exiled with died or disappeared. Things improved slightly when she ran into the Legion of Death, they at least could offer some food and shelter. She stayed with them, sewing up dwarves that hadn’t died yet. Things improved further with the arrival of a batch of haggard Grey Wardens. They gave her directions to an exit and Sawbones bid the lot of them goodbye, she wasn't ready to die just yet.

The first people she ran into on the surface were a group of Chantry missionaries, who decided to take it as their mission to educate and convert this poor ignorant Dwarf. Completely out of her depth and weary to the bone, the life offered by the Chantry seemed like a dream, so she took them up on it. She was an apt student and heavily influenced by the writings of Brother Gemitivi. So it was to the surprise of no one that after taking her vows, she immediately set off to be a traveling scholar herself.

CRAU HISTORY
RP NAME: [community profile] faderift
While not heavily involved in main plots, Sawbones did see a Lot of Shit in her two or so years in Riftwatch. Including going into the Fade twice, once in a Dark Alternate Universe where Riftwatch had been destroyed (she showed up late, it was still a bad time). She's lost what little loyalty she had to the Chantry and become more and more invested in taking care of the people around her (whether they want her to or not).

Also one time she nearly got eaten by a giant bird. It was terrible and she doesn't appreciate it at all.

PERSONALITY

Sawbones is tired. It's gone past being a state of being and evolved into a full blown personality trait. Sleep has never come easy and now that she's found relative peace, it comes even less. She pushes on because that's what a Duster does, her dedication to her on going studies a massive driving force. The surface is a vast, confusing, terrifying place and Sawbones is starved for knowledge. Discovering that there's even more beyond that and even deeper mysteries within the surface has made her even more dedicated to her pursuits. She is fascinated by all new concepts presented to her, only tripping when there are things she can't write off as "weird Surface shit." Despite being rejected by Orzammar's society, she still clings to the identity of Casteless and of being a proper Orzammar dwarf. She's resentful of anything that shakes up her understanding of what that means.

As a surgeon, she is excellent. She doesn't know how to be gentle, but she knows how to keep people alive in terrible situations and like any doctor, she's willing to pull out every trick to fight off death. She begrudges no one her services and is intensely protective of her patients health, especially if she feels they're not especially good at looking after themselves. Living on the fringes of society, her sense of right and wrong are fluid and social rules imposed by the rich are mostly just suggestions. Living on the surface and especially in Kirkwall where the disparities between groups are stark, she's grown to be even more mercenary in her approach towards those with power and wealth. Take what you can, where you can, whenever you can.

While she is very vocal and willing to hurl herself into an argument at almost any given moment, she doesn't handle actual violence well. She keeps her shit on lock down so tight that occasionally she has to disappear into a closet and sleep for a few days until she feels able to face the world again. Despite being incredibly nosy when it comes to people she considers herself responsible for, she's far more inclined to isolate or carry on like nothing's wrong when there is in fact something deeply wrong.

CANON POWERS
- Thedian Dwarves are chronically magicless to the point that it's nearly a power.
- But also they have a mild resistance to magic
- "Stone Sense" which is theorized to be the ability to hear lyrium deposits underground and find their way via that. So noisy magic rocks, she can hear 'em.
- She can't dream without some kind of magical intervention. She has had two (2) dreams in her entire life and she is still wildly offended by both.

POWER SELECTION

POWER TYPE

ABILITIES
Field Medic
Sawbones has extensive experience sewing up and keeping people alive in horrible situations! Specifically on battle fields where the technology is medieval and magic use is either unavailable or finite. She has a bad time with violence, but in the thick of a situation, she keeps her head and keeping people alive.

Austerity Expert
Casteless are worth less than dirt! They're not allowed to hold jobs without facing real risk of banishment or death! As such, Sawbones is really, really good at finding use for every single scrap of a resource and finding work arounds when she runs out of that resource.

Botanist and Cleric
Her training in the Chantry was more scholarly focused than theological focused. Sawbones has an intense fascination with most things to do with flora and fauna, particularly potential practical applications. She keeps extensive notes in field journals and is quick to pick up or accept new concepts, as long as they're not too outlandish.

Midwife
Listen, it probably won't come up, but also Sawbones knows what happens when you get a bunch of hot young people traveling together.

Crime Nun
Listen. Sometimes, you gotta aggressively encourage people (nobles) to donate to the poor. And if sometimes you gotta make those donations for them without them knowing, it is what it is.

SETTING/SUITABILITY
Despite being a noncombatant, Sawbones is intimately familiar with combat situations and Not Dying.

Status

DIVISION: Research
PROJECTS: tbd

She can be found frequently in the Gallows library or in Kirkwall's Chantry. She's also regularly found in LowTown, specifically seedier bars and brothels because her patient base has never really changed and someone's gotta do it. Yes, she's still wearing her habit. No, she does not see the problem here.

Reputation

- Among genteel circles, she is known as Sister Sara or "the Chantry dwarf." Gossip is idle at best and tends to focus on speculating as to why she left Ozammar to begin with. Theories vary wildly, the more salacious the better.

- Those with direct ties to the Chantry will be familiar with the rumor that Reverend Mother Lucile had plucked her out of the Ozammar slums specifically to improve her own chances at becoming Divine. There is also a rumor the reason behind her traveling is she was kicked out of Orlais for arguing with an Elder Cleric over accessing forbidden texts.

- Among the lower rungs of society, she's known as an excellent midwife and discreet doctor for those too skittish to seek out a mage's help. Go to the Chantry and ask for the Littlest Sister. If she's there, she'll help.

- If you're in with the Carta, she's Sawbones. Drag a bleeder to her and she'll sew him up, no questions asked.

Hooks

- She is absolutely the least qualified person to be representing the Chantry, please ask her anything about the Maker.

- She's the medical version of Dagna, come talk to her about standardizing magical medical practices.

- If you got a Rift Shard, Sawbones has a vested interest in getting to know you please let her study your hand.

- Her bread and butter is keeping assholes and lowlifes alive, SO IF YOU'RE ONE OF THOSE... she doesn't particularly want to see you, but show up anyhow, she'll probably just sigh.

- Personhood is Pretty Fucking Wild, Huh and other traumas that we're probably not going to talk about, but definitely think very loudly.
